Wow, the last show, literally, before the funding drive starts this morning at 9am. It's been nice to have a bit of a break -- went to NYC and spent some time out in Longview on a film set, but I'm happy to be back, diggin' through tracks for y'all....
Last Show of the Summer
Fall is my favourite time of the year -- beautiful days, crisp evenings and perfect slacks weather. i was made for fall. Last show before the big NYC trip; talk about a walk down memory lane....
SOCAN early morning
Some Fridays I come in here and I'm just totally exhausted and know the rest of my day is screwed. Those are frustrating days, to say the least. Lots of Canadian content today....
Bookended
Two 5am mornings this week! I don't remember the last time that happened. See you all at Roc the Bells....
First Part of the Bookends.
So, I’m doing Monday and Friday this week, so MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN — i jest. Summer’s finally here in Calgary; everyone’s at the lake and the slow down is in full effect until September. I hope all you Monday listeners are down with the JazzStains format. This one goes out...
Back From Montreal
hello kiddies -- feels like I've been away from the booth for eons, but it's really only been a few weeks. Just returned from two weeks in Montreal where I took in the 30 anniversary edition of the Montreal Jazz Festival. As I always say, if you haven't been, go!...
Jazz Festival Starts Monday in Calgary
Calgary Jazz Fest starts on the 22nd of June! Go see some shows. I know everyone is all excited about Sled Island, but try to make it out to some of the Jazz shows and support venues you don't normally go to. There's some stuff coming this year that's as good...
Not Quite White Sneaker Season
You only notice how big your white shoe collection is, when you can't wear them. It's weekends and weather like this, where i wish i had a fireplace. Nothing crazy on this show. First hour starts with a bunch of instrumentals. Second hour we pop it up a little with Coltrane and...
First Floating Weekend of the Year?
With the weather turning around, I'm curious if we're going to see our first river floating of the season? Lots of other big events in Calgary as well; if you haven't yet, check our Paul Spence and Dave Lawrence in "The Western" at Loose Moose on Friday or Saturday. Wig out Friday...
May 1st and it’s looking a lot like summer!
Wow, it's been a full month since my last show. Unreal. Feels like I've lived a high event life since then and looking forward to everything just settling into rafting and driving range season....
It’s Still March!!
Calgary gets more snow in March than any other month, so I'm a little surprised that everyone is flipping out about this recent "cold" snap. Maybe we have "global warming" locked down in our subconscious now and just can't comprehend things actually being normal?...
Friday the 13th
Am I the only one who thinks that this new policy of not leaving tickets on car windshields is a total bogus move by the city? i got 5 parking tickets in the mail last week but had no idea that my car was illegally parked (which i still don't believe it was)....
Last Show Before the Trade Deadline
I handle my playlist in the first hour and get into a nice sequence of song birds. Second hour starts with Moe Koffman's 1967 and the third hour we get a little more hip hop than we've been in a few weeks -- sweet! I hope you enjoy the show....
Change YOU Can Believe In?
First Hour I knock off a lot of playlist because I have some records to play in the bottom part of the show....
almost valentine’s day
i don't hate valentine's day, but i wish there was the equivalent for a guy, like "dude's day" or "fella friday" or something because Vday is definitely for the ladies -- anyone who says otherwise is spinning a web of white lies....
Double Hoodie Weather. Pretty Sweet
So, this morning we've got a bit of a mix bag. In the first hour I'm going to continue to explore some of the more dominant labels in jazz, picking up this week with the big solid, Verve. I left my indo Jazz records at home (it's early when i leave the...
